stop and chat

- mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi.

- mi mi, mi mi mi mi mi mi mi.

(translation):

- it’s very warm today here in saskatoon.

- indeed, it’s very warm today. i was standing on the broadway bridge this afternoon, watching the snow melt into the saskatchewan river. the ice is starting to break up. it made me want to dive into the river and get refreshed. summer is almost here! in fact, it’s so hot today that my fish is drying out a bit. ha ha!! does your fish feel dry? it should be slightly wet on the surface. my fish always gets tired in the heat and just lies there. no energy, no co-operation, so i have to drag him around. maybe i’ll buy him ice cream to cheer him up. i haven’t had ice cream for a long time — except for that one time at costco. do you like ice cream?

- …???…

like larry david, i’m not very good at the “stop and chat”.

in japan, it is very important to follow specific instructions to master the tradition of eating sushi. otherwise, you’ll end up being turned into sushi yourself.

yes, the rules are strict. but after all, that’s the samurai way (”naruhodo, samurai no kuni desu ne”).

in my high school, there was an after-school sushi ceremony club (寿司道 = “sushido”), where we trained carefully in the art of eating sushi under our sushi-master, Kinpachi-sensei. students who didn’t follow his directions exactly were sliced carefully into sashimi with his katana sword.

outside of the formal sushi ceremony, the rules are more relaxed, especially for foreigners. but there are still many subtle cultural nuances that everyone who eats sushi should be aware of. luckily, there is now a video demonstrating (in japanese with english subtitles) the way for everyone to eat sushi.

art bra

i’m not a diva type, but i thought i should add some spice to my drawings for the women’s art festival opening this weekend in saskatoon. the festival is called “her-icane go-diva“, for some reason. at the festival, i’m officially an “emerging visual artist”. hurray! our opening is this evening (friday) at 6pm, at SCYAP (saskatoon community youth arts programming center).

one of the main events at the festival is the “art bra” show and auction. different artists (not me) are designing their artistic bras. i’m not very good at that kind of female-oriented activity, but i thought i should draw a bra for the festival. instead, i drew human breasts on a chicken. the chicken is proud to have such delicious-looking breasts, but the girl is not so impressed. “they’re just pieces of meat, after all”.

the kanji (chinese characters) say “bird breasts”. i should have written “chicken breasts”, but i wasn’t really paying attention.

this drawing and another one of mine, also featuring a chicken (violent type), will be showing at SCYAP until march 31st.

to japanese readers:

日本人のみなさんへ。私、関西出身の日本人なので、日本語でのコメントも大歓迎です。

よろしくね。

curious

(click the image for a closeup look)

i didn’t realize i could draw such a handsome sheep. i wanted to have him do something funny. my first idea was to have the horn stabbing someone in the eye, but i thought that was too obvious. anyway, the key point is, this particular sheep isn’t violent, he’s just curious. and nothing is more curious than large strawberry panties.

this is part of my drawing show at phonographique, on until april 1st.

UPDATE: you can buy a postcard of this drawing from my SHOP.
